Information You Need To Know About Your Medication
Most American adults take at least one medication (prescribed or over-the-counter) on a daily basis. But do we really understand what we are taking or how different medications can interact with each other. Here are some pointers to help you take your medications safely.
- Timing may be a key. Some drugs are better absorbed by your body at various times of the day. For example, cholesterol-absorbing drugs are best if taken at night because that is when your body produces the most cholesterol. Check with your doctor to see when the best time is to take certain medications.
- Don’t store meds in the bathroom. Even though it may be the most logical place to store medications, the bathroom can be the worst place because of heat, moisture and temperature change. All can cause medications to degrade.
- Don’t crush or split pills without checking first. Some people may crush or split pills to save money, but this may reduce the effectiveness of the drug. Some drugs such as time-released drugs or drugs that are coated to protect the stomach will not work as well if they are crushed or split. Always check with your pharmacist before crushing or splitting any medications.
- Take medication as directed by your doctor. Be sure and listen to your doctor’s instructions about taking medication even though you may be feeling better. For instance, it takes the full course of antibiotics to clear an infection out of your system. Medications for chronic conditions such as asthmas, cholesterol or high blood pressure might not show an immediate effect once stopped, but there could be some long-term consequences if you stop the medication without the consent of your doctor.
- Get your doctor’s approval before switching to generics. Generics are cheaper than name-brand drugs, but they aren’t exactly the same as name-brand drugs. In some instances, this does not matter. However, with some medications some as blood-thinning or heart medications—it does ake a difference and you should not switch to the cheaper generic without getting your doctor’s approval first.
